We recommend starting with a ‘first name’ only book. Print out the two Tutorial pages to follow the steps together. After printing book pages, you can:
- Look through the printed pages together and let them find the letters in their name.
- Make a game of choosing the correct order of pages to create their book.
- Encourage them to make up a story about the whimsical characters they see.
- Help them sound out the letters as they build their name.
- Count the number of letters in their name.
- Talk about when to use a capital letter. The Back Cover has examples of capital and lower case letters.
- Color anytime; but you might want to reward a completed book, with new crayons.
Practice skills before book building. It is best to introduce the scissors, paperclips and stapler before they see their book pages. Go over the safety rules, thoroughly. Demonstrate the best practices, while using the items. Include ‘scissor safety’ and how not to point them at another person. A young child should use only blunt style scissors. Each step can be a teaching moment.
